For the past 25 years, Ra Paulette has been living in the desert, spending his time carving a sandstone cave that he found and turning it into a majestic subterranean space, an architectural gem peppered with the most astonishing details. This is something everyone should see!
Ra never studied architecture. He never studied sculpting nor structural engineering, but the moment he saw these hills, he found his passion – cave sculpting.
Watch this amazing video.
Ra worked on these caves for years with no one but his dog for a companion.
He calls his hillsides creation “the cave effect”, which he describes as “It has a lot to do with the juxtaposition of opposites: the sense of being under ground with the light streaming in; the intimacy of being in a cave, yet the columns end up very large, sometimes thirty to forty feet high.”
He created different styles and designs for every cavern, giving each one unique textures and extraordinary details.
His purpose for sculpting this gigantic artwork is to create an environment that would inspire “spiritual renewal and personal well being.”
Ra’s masterpiece is not yet finished. But once it is, it will also serve as a venue for artistic events.
