Editor’s note: This beautiful story has been around for years. Some may claim that the story is pure fiction. That’s partly true, and partly not true. This particular incident in the life Thomas A. Edison has some historical basis. As a child, Edison was described by his teachers as “addled” that made his mother furious and took him out of the school and proceeded to teach him herself. He was taught reading, writing, arithmetic, and was always very curious and taught himself much by reading on his own.
Edison said many years later, “My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me, and I felt I had someone to live for, someone I must not disappoint.”
