One day, this homeowner who called himself locolukas on Reddit decided to do something awesome to his lawn. Instead of mowing grass during the summer, he said “F#@* the Lawn” and replaced it with a giant vegetable garden.
The results are simply amazing.
He started by making 8 raised beds with reclaimed redwood barn siding.
He filled them with free compost that the city gave away.
Seeds started to sprout quickly.
Creating the irrigation system, he said, is a PITA.
He lined the garden with cinder blocks and filled them with compost as well. He also covered the ground with wood chips, and created a honeybee sanctuary with rosemary, thyme, lavender, and basil planted in them.
Arugula came first.
Spinach.
Then beets.
Radishes started growing quickly.
Plenty of carrots.
Peas.
This is his favorite feature of the garden: a “free veggies” box. He shares his wealth with everyone.
Green onions.
The beets keep coming.
Romano musica beans.
Tomatillos.
Cucumbers.
Peppers.
Tomatoes.
The beautiful squash blossoms.
Lots of flowers.
Herbs!
This is the front yard as seen from the street in the middle of June.
